Threads' sign-in flow is tied to Instagram, which trips people up if they're expecting a separate account. Here's the full picture.

Threads uses your existing Instagram credentials — there's no separate Threads password to create or remember. Open the app (or go to threads.com on desktop) and tap Continue with Instagram. If you're already logged into Instagram on the same device, this is typically a single tap with no password re-entry needed.
If you don't have the app yet
Threads is available on iOS and Android — search "Threads" in your app store, or on desktop go directly to threads.com. No standalone Threads account is required to sign up; an Instagram account is the only prerequisite.
Forgot your Instagram password?
Since Threads authentication runs through Instagram, resetting your Instagram password (via Instagram's own "Forgot password" flow) also resolves Threads sign-in issues. There's no separate Threads-specific password recovery.
Using multiple accounts
If you manage more than one Threads profile (personal + business, for example), you can switch between linked accounts from the profile menu without fully logging out — the same way Instagram handles multiple accounts.
Can you view Threads without logging in?
Yes, for public profiles — you don't need an account to browse public posts. Our free Threads viewer lets you look up any public profile without logging in or creating an account, which is useful if you just want to check a profile without committing to a sign-up.
Still can't get in?
If Instagram sign-in works but Threads specifically won't load, check whether it's a broader outage first, then try the standard fixes (force-close and reopen, update the app, check your connection) — the same steps that resolve most other Threads hiccups.
